The idea for the Leo Holmsten Human Life Award arose from a growing recognition that while abortion defenders and activists were regularly commending each other for pro-abortion legislation and court victories, pro-life people - generally volunteers with family and other obligations - found little time to celebrate their own, often heroic, efforts and extraordinary accomplishments.
In the spring of 1997, achievement of the goal of restoration of respect for innocent human life remained distant. That reality sometimes worked to conceal the selfless, often difficult, but highly effective work of many pro-life people in their continuing efforts to change hearts and minds. Recognizing an opportunity, Geraldine Oftedahl suggested the idea of an annual banquet and award to publicly recognize the efforts of outstanding area pro-life people. A formal proposal was made to a diverse group of area pro-life leadership organizations and other interested individuals and was immediately embraced with great enthusiasm. Presently over 20 groups continue to convene annually to celebrate the outstanding pro-life achievements of area individuals.
For the first
award, an informal poll revealed nearly unanimous agreement that Dr.
Leo Holmsten be the first award recipient and his selection presented
yet another opportunity. Inspired by the model of Dr. Holmsten's longtime
and tireless devotion to pro-life work it soon became clear that his
devotion to the pro-life issue could continue long beyond his lifetime
if the award were presented in his name. Today, the Leo Holmsten Human
Life Award is an established Rochester pro-life institution not only
commemorating Dr. Holmsten and his lifetime achievements, but serving
as a focus of inspiration and fulfillment for resolute pro-life advocates
as well.
Dr. Holmsten, a widely respected obstetrician and gynecologist, began in private practice in Rochester, New York in 1963. From 1969 through 1972 he was Medical Director Planned Parenthood. But Dr. Holmsten eventually saw the fire on a distant mountain, resigned from Planned Parenthood, and embarked on a tireless program of testimony regarding the anti-life philosophy, policies and practices of Planned Parenthood and the entire abortion establishment. Simultaneously he established and developed a compassionate and effective pro-life OB/Gyn practice.
Until June of 1997 Dr. Holmsten maintained a private practice in obstetrics and gynecology and selflessly and generously performed innumerable volunteer activities for pro-life service and advocacy groups. Sadly, his battle against cancer ended in November 1997.
The first award, bearing his name, was presented to Dr. Holmsten in September 1997.
